Lighthouses in Istria

There are 9 lighthouses in Istria, large and small. They are spread from the northwest coast towards the south end of the peninsula and at the eastern coast of Istria. The lighthouses are: Cape Savudrija lighthouse, Cape Tooth lighthouse, St. Nicholas lighthouse, St. John in the open sea lighthouse, Cape Peneda lighthouse, Cape Verudica lighthouse, Cape Porer lighthouse, Cape Marlera lighthouse and Cape Black Punta lighthouse.

Lighthouses are used for indicating dangerous coasts, shallow water and reefs, as well as safe entrances to the harbors. They can also be used as help in air navigation.
Each lighthouse has its own characteristic and permanent color of light - white, red or green, and the precise time sequence of darkness and light, so that sailors can with certainty know from which lighthouse the light comes. They are characterized by stone fortification buildings with visible lighthouse towers and small windows in the towers.
The tallest lighthouses in Istria are Porer (31m) and Savudrija (29 m), while the others are smaller.

Lighthouses also represent special places for a unique and different holiday. Choose a lighthouse in the vicinity of tourist centers or a lighthouse in the open sea - a real paradise which separates You from the rush and everyday commitments.

Mystical and majestic, isolated on reefs like some kind of the forgotten giants, the lighthouses have always been objects of fascination. Many of them are famous for numerous stories and myths which make them even more mysterious...
