On Brijuni

As early as the beginning of the 20th century Brijuni had one of the largest golf courses in Europe. In 1922, the Austrian industrialist Karl Kupelwieser, owner of Brijuni at that time, had a golf course built, which at the beginning of the 1930s was additionally reconstructed. It was then an 18 hole golf course, 5,742 meters long. Owing to leading American and English architects it was continuously improved so that golf could be played only an hour or two after heavy rain.

This was the site where members of the European and world aristocracy participated in numerous tournaments, since at that time the Brijuni Islands were one of the leading fashionable resorts in this part of Europe.
The fascinating scenery, as well as the fact that you can play golf on the very coast under the crowns of centuries-old Mediterranean trees makes the game truly exceptional.

Today this is a partially reconstructed 9 hole golf course with sand greens in teeoffs. International tournaments are held again here and the reconstruction of the old 18 hole golf course is expected soon.

How to reach the golf course?

At the Brijuni Tourist Service office in Fažana you should buy a ticket (green fee) for the golf course and get on board the boat. After arriving in Brijuni harbour, take the road to the right, behind the Hotel 'Karmen'. Following the road along the coast, after some 500 m, you will notice the practice area (Driving Range) on the left. Continue along the road by the sea, cross a little bridge over a fish pond, and you have reached the golf course. You will first notice the green hole number 9 on your left side. The starting positions for the first hole are on the right side of the road.

When to come and play golf?

Unlike most golf courses in Europe, here golf can be played all year round. Whenever you decide to arrive, the temperature is always pleasant, since even in January it rarely drops below 0o C. In winter the cold wind bora sometime blows, but this will not stop you from enjoying your game. Depending on the amount of rain in summer the grass sometimes turns yellow, however the local rule (moving the ball is allowed) enables you to continue playing golf.

One thing we can tell you for sure is that whenever you decide to come here, peace and tranquillity await you. Sometimes you will even be alone on the entire golf course which is certainly a unique experience.
