In that moment when winter knocks on our door and the first snow covers the mountain tops, we invite you to descend to the sea and enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean climate, running along the Lim bay and the Vrsar hinterland on a two-day event called Lim Bay Challenge - Sunny Winter Trail.
The central venue is Camp Portosole near Vrsar, Istria.
On Saturday, December 16 2017, there are two categories on schedule - Sunny and Fun&Run, while on Sunday, December 17 are Urban category and Kids Trail Run (race for the youngest).
Competitors of the Sunny category are going to be transported by buses to the start - the famous medieval fort of Dvigrad, whose walls are going to be the starting point of the race. The finish line is at Camp Portosole. The Sunny category is a classic hardcore trail race with 900m uphill and 1000m downhill on the 29 km track. The track is abundant with exceptionally beautiful sceneries, which, together with the mentioned Dvigrad, include the most beautiful viewpoints from which you can see the Lim Bay. The terrain itself is an interesting mix of Mediterranean rocky trails, forest of Kontija and coastal woodland.
The Urban category (16km +250m), scheduled for the second day, is a kind of soft trail variant intended for classic trail runners as well for those who prefer road and urban running. The difference between the classical road running is that the Urban category along the standard asphalted roads includes a multitude of slopes and macadamas through thematic and classic parks and tourist camps, and unforgettable stairs in the old city cores. The track moves along the shore of Camp Portosole to the north and passes through the old town of Vrsar, a quarry beneath it, several campsites by the sea, the Sculpture Park Dušan Džamonja, the town of Funtana, and then returning to the finish at Camp Portosole.
Fun & Run category (10km +150 m) is designed as a recreational race for all who want to spend a day in nature and enjoy easy walking and jogging.
Kids Trail Run category is intended for children of preschool and school age up to 14 years.
For the contestants in categories Fun&Run, Urban and Kids Trail Run start and finish will be at Camp Portosole.
Beside winners in overall and female competition in each category, the winners of the overall weekend event in overall and female competition will be announced. Times from Sunny and Urban categories will be summed up in the spirit of the stage race and the winner will be the competitor with the best time.
115 years ago, on December 15, 1902, a train covered the route between Buje and Poreč for the first time, driving along the at the time new narrow gauge railroad Parenzana. It was thus that the second section of the railroad previously connecting Trieste and Poreč was put into operation. With the total length of 123 kilometres, it wound through the green istrian landscapes, connecting 33 Istrian settlements.
Over the last ten years, parts of Parenzana were transformed into a hiking and bicycle trail, unique for the viaducts, tunnels and railway stations preserved along the route, dating back to the time when it was daily thundered through by a small locomotive.
Commemorating the 115th anniversary of the first train ride between Buje and Poreč, the Tourist Board of the Town of Buje is organizing a hiking campaign from Buje to Grožnjan and back, along the restored route of the Parenzana.
The start is in front of the old railroad station in Buje at 10 a.m. and trail-side refreshments are ensured for all participants.
