    Trekking & trail races

If you would like to have an active spring weekend and are a bit stuck for ideas? Or maybe you are an active runner in search of an exciting race? The Alba Sport and Recreation Club organises its Dvigrad Outdoor Weekend running event in the area of Kanfanar and its surrounding area on 25th and 26th May.

You will be able to experience the beauty of the medieval city of Dvigrad along with your orientation skills in the Ultra or Challenger categories, and for beginners there is the Light category.
All of them are trekking categories, so that moving around with the map will take you through the most stunning parts of Kanfanar and reveal the hidden treasures of central Istria.

Ultra is some 40 km long, whilst those participants who are more expert in orientation will pass through around 25 km in the Challenger race.
Since this year's event has expanded throughout the weekend, on the second day a trail for those with excess energy together with lovers of classic running without maps will take place. On the 10 km race, you will not have to worry about maps and compasses; instead you will have a chance to sightsee the nature and enjoy an active day on the marked trail.

Races are intended for everyone, both for masters and more passionate runners, so do not think your physical preparation can be an excuse for that weekend.
The organisers will provide refreshment points throughout the race, whilst you can charge your energy at the finish with a hot meal. The best competitors will win sponsor's awards, whilst every competitor will get an official race T-shirt. All information about the race is available on our web page www.dvigradtrek.srk-alba.hr, and enrolments can be done via stotinka.hr and will be open from the beginning of February.

Prepare your compasses for this spring adventure and let your hosts introduce you to the most beautiful parts of their region. See you under the walls of Dvigrad.

Folk festival and Istrian cattle fair

Folk festival and Istrian cattle fair

Today a folk festivity, once a fair on St. Jacob's Day, Jakovlja truly has a long tradition. With the aim of preserving Istrian folk heritage, the local fair ground in Kanfanar becomes the venue for the traditional fair of Istrian oxen that takes place on Jakovlja. The Istrian ox descends from the extinct primeval ox that was once prevalent in Istria. This ox of pure breed is believed to be the largest mammal in Europe and one of the most beautiful in the whole world. It is well known as a meek animal that has always been the most important farm animal in Istria. Boškarini graze and browse on almost everything on this soil, so thanks to them forests and pastureland once looked like parks.

The parade of Istrian oxen is the most entertaining part of St. Jacob’s Day in Kanfanar. The long tradition of celebrating St. Jacob’s Day begins with a rare parade of oxen, accompanied by a brass band and majorettes. Some of the oxen draw old farm waggons, carrying folk singers and dancers, wine barrels and ploughs. The nostalgic scene of past times and customs passes through Kanfanar to the site where the cattle are weighed, with the heaviest animal winning first prize. An ox-ploughing competition takes places on a nearby field for the best score in obedience. The merry parade then heads back to the fairgrounds, where a jury examines each head of cattle in the beauty category. Finally, winners in all three categories are announced. Adding to the fun of the parade, folk music and dance are a variety of daylong activities, such as bicycling, a bocce ball tournament, a clay pigeon shooting contest and a selection of gastronomic specialties.

    Musical event

One of the most valuable things of Istrian cultural heritage is a specific folk song singing style, so-called “singing at thin and thick”. As such, the two part narrow intervals of Istrian and Croatian coast are included in the UNESCO representative list of intangible cultural heritage, which has become one of the 13 intangible Croatian assets protected by this organisation. In order to preserve the traditional Istrian folk singing, people can visit the manifestation “Sing the Traditional Istrian songs” in September in Barat, where this specific and unique type of folk singing is heard.

The authentic Istria has been created from generation to generation, with family gatherings around a fire place. To experience this, one should come and see the Kantadurs of Barat, where singing verses were taught by grandparents underneath the open sky, at the bottom of the Saint Peter in Chains church.
