This is a peculiar way of securing boats. True enough, we can find such cranes in other parts of Istria, too, but we can also well say that the ones of Savudrija are the best known. They have even become part of the emblem of Savudrija Tourist Association, along with the other symbol of the place - the lighthouse.
To hang small unmoored boats in a safe harbour becomes necessary because of possible damages caused by bad weather. In this case, the fishermen's worst enemy is the southwestern wind, known as lebić or grbin, which occasions forceful and dangerous intrusions of the sea.
To raise the boats above the sea level one uses ropes running in pulleys. The poles were originally made of wood only, but nowadays some are made of iron.
