The First Truffle Fair
At Stara Oštarija in Buzet, the First Truffle Fair is taking place — a market-style and educational exhibition dedicated to the opening of the Istrian summer black truffle season (Tuber aestivum). Although called the "first," this is in fact a regularly held event that marks the symbolic beginning of the truffle hunting season and kicks off a series of annual celebrations dedicated to this prized delicacy.
Buzet, known as the Town of Truffles, is the perfect setting for such an event. Some of the finest truffles showcased at the fair come from nearby areas — including Hum, Roč, Sovinjak, Vrh, as well as Novaki Motovunski, Gradinje, and Grožnjan.
In addition to offering the opportunity to taste Istrian truffles, the fair places a strong emphasis on education. Visitors can discover fascinating facts about different truffle varieties and learn how to identify authentic Istrian truffles.
The summer black truffle, the focus of the fair, has a milder aroma and flavour compared to the better-known white truffle, making it an excellent choice for those just beginning to explore the world of truffles. For this reason, the fair is designed for and open to everyone — from dedicated truffle enthusiasts to curious first-timers — offering a unique opportunity to experience this exceptional Istrian delicacy first-hand.
