Parenzana Anniversary Hike
On 15 December 1902, the first train travelled the route between Buje and Poreč, running along the newly built narrow-gauge railway. This marked the opening of the second section of the line connecting the ports of Trieste and Poreč (Parenzo). The first section, linking Trieste and Buje, had already been inaugurated on 1 April 1902, paving the way for the completion of one of the most significant transport links in Istria, popularly known as the Parenzana.
Stretching for 123 kilometres from Trieste to Poreč, the railway operated between 1902 and 1935, winding through the peninsula's picturesque landscapes, connecting 33 towns and villages.
The railway played a vital role in shaping life and trade across Istria, carrying both passengers and local produce, including olive oil, wine, fruit and vegetables, to market and helping drive the region's prosperity. Owing to the challenging terrain and the numerous tunnels and viaducts that characterised the route, the journey from Trieste to Poreč took approximately six to seven hours, offering travellers a remarkable passage through the diverse landscapes of the Istrian peninsula.
Walk Through History on the Parenzana Trail
Over the past decade, large sections of the former railway have been transformed into the scenic walking and cycling trail Parenzana – the Route of Health and Friendship.
Each year, the anniversary of the railway’s first journey between Buje and Poreč is marked with a guided hiking event along the restored Parenzana route. This unique experience invites participants to retrace a section of the historic railway while enjoying some of the most picturesque landscapes of north-western Istria.
The trail follows the route from Buje to Grožnjan and back, leading walkers through vineyards, olive groves, tunnels and panoramic viewpoints. Combining history, nature and recreation, the hike offers a memorable opportunity to discover the heritage of one of Istria’s attractive landmarks while enjoying the beauty of the region in the company of fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Participation is free of charge.
