This is the essence of Therefore I Am, the exhibition by artist Georgette Yvette Ponté at the Tower of St. Martin in Buje. Georgette, winner of last year’s Toranj žena (Women’s tower) competition, creates works through powerful gestures, intense colours, and fragmented forms of the human body - works that do not seek explanation, but emotion.

This is not an exhibition that speaks quietly. It pulses, interacts with the space, and leaves a lasting impression. Through painting, sculpture, performance, and video art, the artist has spent years developing a distinctive visual language, exhibiting both in Croatia and internationally, while also shaping public spaces through sculptures that live among people.

The Tower of St. Martin - Guardian of History at the Entrance to Buje
This pentagonal stone fortress was built in the 15th century during the Venetian era as part of the defensive system of Castrum Bulleis. It served as an important stronghold for the town guard and as a symbol of watchfulness over the surrounding landscape of vineyards, forests, and narrow medieval streets.
After losing its original military role in the 18th century, the tower was transformed into a noble family residence. Unlike many fortifications that did not survive the passage of time, the Tower of St. Martin has been carefully preserved and restored, and today remains one of Buje’s most recognizable historical landmarks.
