Nepenthe – Elixir from the Land of the Sun

- Discover a story of splendour, belief, and everyday life in the ancient communities of the Land of the Sun -

The exhibition “Nepenthe – Elixir from the Land of the Sun” offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of ancient Paeonia through remarkable archaeological finds that reveal the complex social structures, spiritual beliefs, and influential role of women in Iron Age communities.

Nepenthe transports visitors into the mystical world of the Iron Age, shedding light on the lives, beliefs, and rituals of the ancient communities that inhabited the Vardar Valley in present-day North Macedonia. At the heart of the exhibition are four richly furnished female graves dating to the late 8th and early 7th centuries BC. The exceptional grave goods they contained testify to the high social and spiritual status women held within these communities.

The graves were discovered at the significant archaeological site of Lisičin Dol near Valandovo, a site that provides valuable insight into the wealth, spirituality, and social hierarchy of the Paeonian communities of the Vardar Valley. Particular attention is given to Macedonian-Paeonian bronze artefacts and distinctive pyxis-shaped pendants - small capsules in the form of poppy pods - which point to a close connection between ritual practices and healing traditions during the Iron Age.

Viewed through the lens of social archaeology, these finds highlight distinctions in status among women, suggesting that knowledge of the poppy’s medicinal properties and control over the concept of the “sacred sleep” conferred considerable social influence. Priestess-healers, described as facilitators of cultic rituals, served as intermediaries between the community and the divine.

The exhibition has been cariied out through the collaboration of the Archaeological Museum of Istria and the Archaeological Museum of North Macedonia.
