Description
Nestled in the far north-western corner of Croatian Istria, right on the border with the Slovenian part of the peninsula, lies the picturesque medieval town of Momjan. Steeped in history, this region has nurtured a centuries-old tradition of viticulture and olive growing. Its best-known symbol is undoubtedly Muškat momjanski, a unique wine protected by the European Union's Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Prelac Winery is one of only five producers of this highly prized wine.
The Prelac family has been making wine for more than a century, while the winery's modern story began in 1996, when Rino Prelac opened a small wine cellar. At the time, most of the production was sold in the family's tavern, located beside the cellar. Today, the Prelac family cultivates 11 hectares of vineyards on the distinctive white soils surrounding Momjan, with Rino now running the winery alongside his son Denis.
The winery offers around ten wine labels, with its fresh Malvazija istarska, barrel-aged Refosco and two distinctive expressions of Muškat momjanski standing out in particular: a fresh, aromatic wine and a sweet dessert wine made in the traditional passito style. Alongside the winery, the family also runs a traditional tavern that has long been regarded as one of the finest in Istria. Guests can also stay in charming accommodation, where the rooms are named after the estate's signature wines: Malvasia istarska, Muškat momjanski and Refošk.
