Useful information and tips for safe snorkelling

Snorkelling gear

What do you need for snorkelling?

For a pleasant exploration of the seabed, it is enough to have a mask, a snorkel and fins. Many sea lovers prefer to be barefoot, swim on the surface and observe the underwater landscape and its inhabitants. Once you get into watching marine life, it can turn into hours of fun and a whole new world to discover.

Choice of gear

When choosing snorkelling gear, pay special attention to choosing a suitable mask.

You should choose a diving mask according to your face in such a way that you place it on your face without a strap. Breathe in through your nose and create a slight vacuum, then hold your breath. If you don't feel any discomfort and the mask doesn't press or fall off your face, then it's a good model for you. It would also be good if you chose a mask with tempered safety glass because then, should breakage occur, the glass would not fragment into sharp pieces. Choosing a mask can be a matter of philosophy, but the best advice will come from the professional staff at the shop or diving centre.

A snorkel can make snorkelling easier as you do not have to raise your head in order to breathe in air, although you will need to look where you are from time to time so you don't stray too far from the shore or your location.

Fins can make it easier for you to move through the water, but they are not indispensable to enjoy snorkelling.

If you have skin that is sensitive to the sun, we recommended that you use a protective shirt against harmful UV rays. If you are sensitive to cold, you might be more comfortable in a thin diving suit.
