The topic was chosen because of the need to point out and raise awareness about having to take care of sinkholes and caves and the karst terrain in general, the area rich in speleological caves. It's been estimated that there are between 1.500-2.000 such locations in Istria from which only 30% have been explored. Since many sinkholes and caves have been filled with waste for years, this has completely ruined the biodiversity and life in such places as well as endemic and protected plant and animal species.
