Rovinj regatta of traditional boats with lug and latin sail
The Rovinj Traditional Boat Regatta with gaff and lateen sails has been held since 2007 in the waters of Rovinj and today stands as one of the most recognizable events dedicated to preserving maritime heritage in the Adriatic. Over the past twenty years, the Regatta has become a meeting place for the sea, tradition, community and memory, bringing together enthusiasts of traditional sailing from Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.
The aim of the event is to preserve the knowledge and skills of sailing with gaff and lateen sails, traditional boatbuilding, sail painting, and all the stories, customs and emotions that have shaped the identity of Rovinj-Rovigno and its people for centuries. Thanks to the efforts of numerous associations, individuals and the Batana Ecomuseum, traditional sailing with gaff and lateen sails along the Croatian coast was inscribed in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia in 2022.
On the occasion of the event’s 20th anniversary edition, the programme presents “20 Experiences of Rovinj’s Maritime Heritage” — a series of events that celebrate life by the sea and the rich maritime tradition of Rovinj-Rovigno through sailing, music, gastronomy, art, workshops and community gatherings.
The program includes:
⛵️ an exhibition and lecture on the 20th anniversary of the Rovinj Regatta;
⛵️ an interpretive sailing on the sailing ship “Nerezinac” around 20 Rovinj islands;
⛵️ new editions of the gastronomic programs “Viràda in pignàta!” and “Udùri da cà∫a”;
⛵️ a rich children's program that includes a pool with boats, an interactive map of the Rovinj islands, workshops and games;
⛵️ presentation of the TRANS MARIS Interreg Italy-Croatia project intended for mentoring young people;
⛵️ an exhibition of the Croatian History Museum “Adriatic and Ionian Shipping in the Modern Age (1650-1850)”;
⛵️ an exhibition by the Ukrainian artist Tetiana Katsara “Necklaces in the Colors of Batana Sails”;
⛵️ the premiere of a poem dedicated to the Rovinj Regatta;
⛵️ a new photo point “Rovinjska kartolina”;
⛵️ raffle for children;
⛵️ first presentation of Batana's Sweet House;
⛵️ night parade of boats with a special concert on "Nerezinc";
⛵️ launching of the batana "Peîcia" into the sea with a new keeper.
