Pišćaci and Gunjci

Since 2006, the international folklore event “Pišćaci i gunjci uz ples na tavolac” has been bringing generations together in the village of Marušići. Through the distinctive sounds of traditional instruments pišćac, gunjac and bajs, the traditional tavolac dance and performances by folklore ensembles, the event has become a vibrant celebration of northern Istria's rich musical and dance heritage.

The event takes its name from the village musicians of the past - the pišćaci and gunjci - whose music once accompanied local festivities, weddings and community gatherings throughout north-western Istria. One of its highlights is the tavolac, a traditional dance performed on a wooden platform that recreates the lively atmosphere of old village celebrations and stands as a unique example of the region's preserved dance traditions.

Today, Pišćaci and Gunjci is much more than a music festival. Through workshops on traditional music and dance, expert lectures, exhibitions, and the active participation of children and young people, the event plays a vital role in safeguarding and passing on Istria's intangible cultural heritage to future generations.

Over the past two decades, it has grown into one of the region's leading gatherings for traditional musicians, dancers, researchers and enthusiasts of Istrian cultural heritage. A special place in the programme is reserved for the students of Mate Balota Primary School in Buje, who actively learn and preserve the traditional music and dance of their local community.

Over the years, Marušići has welcomed musicians and folklore groups from across Istria, Croatia and beyond, making the event an important meeting place where people of all generations come together through their shared love of tradition, music and community. Visitors can experience traditional dances that were once an essential part of everyday life in Istrian villages, demonstrating that cultural heritage remains truly alive when it is shared, celebrated and passed on from one generation to the next.
