The Cultured Traveller: Istria on the Cover Page of the Latest Issue

Presented as a destination with a strong identity, rich history, and a cohesive cultural landscape, Istria takes centre stage in the magazine’s editorial focus. The cover image, depicting the medieval hilltop town of Završje, immediately positions the peninsula as the heart of the issue.

In its 53rd edition (M arch–May 2026), The Cultured Traveller showcases Istria as the cover destination through an engaging feature by author Nicholas Chrisostomou. He portrays the region as a landscape shaped by Roman monuments, Venetian façades, and medieval hilltop towns, with an interior rich in truffle forests, olive groves, and vineyards.

The article leads readers from a morning in Motovun overlooking the Mirna Valley - accompanied by the search for Istrian truffles in the nearby Motovun Forest - to visits to some of Istria’s most remarkable cultural landmarks. These include the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, the Pazin Castle and the Pazin Abyss, the frescoes of the Dance of Death in the small church of St. Mary at Škriljinah, and the monumental Roman heritage of Pula. Istria’s coastal character is explored through Rovinj, its Church of St. Euphemia, and the city’s distinctive layered urban structure, alongside its contemporary hotel offerings. The story also highlights Brijuni National Park, interpreting its value through the many layers of its rich history.

Chrisostomou describes Istrian olive oil as among the finest produced at the northernmost limits of Mediterranean cultivation, emphasizing the region’s indigenous varieties. Ultimately, he defines Istria through a sense of balance - between history and modernity, the rural interior and the coast, refined gastronomy and an absence of pretension. It is precisely this “quiet coherence,” as he describes it, that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.
