ATP Umag Star Line-up: Wawrinka, Cerundolo, Hurkacz, and Tsitsipas Are on Their Way!
Umag continues its unique sporting legacy this year: three and a half decades of tennis, and nine champions who later became world number ones!
Following confirmations from Stan Wawrinka, Francisco Cerundolo, and Hubert Hurkacz, another top-ranked star has confirmed his appearance at Stella Maris - Stefanos Tsitsipas!
At the milestone 35th edition of the ATP tournament Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, defending champion Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina will once again take to the court. Last year, he impressed both the crowd and the organizers-not only with his world-class tennis, but also with his connection to the fans and deep appreciation for the tournament. Also confirming his return to the Stella Maris courts is legendary Swiss player Stan Wawrinka. The three-time Grand Slam champion claimed the very first title of his trophy-laden career right here in Umag!
The only Croatian ATP tournament will also host Hubert Hurkacz, the best Polish tennis player ever and a competitor who was ranked an impressive sixth in the ATP singles rankings less than a year ago. So far, the 28-year-old has won eight ATP titles, with his first victory coming in 2019. Since then, he has rapidly climbed the rankings. He has achieved all his results in an impressive fashion, defeating players from the very top of the world rankings. At Wimbledon, he knocked out Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev; in Miami, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev; and he also defeated Rublev in a dramatic final in Shanghai.
The audience in Umag will also get to see one of the 5-6 most exciting players in the world. Stefanos Tsitsipas has been among the very top of world tennis for years. He is currently ranked 20th in the ATP singles rankings and has finished each season among the top ten for five consecutive years, from 2019 to 2023. During his career, he has won 12 ATP titles, with his most notable achievements being three triumphs at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tournament. Until now, he has never played at the Istrian ATP.
The arrival of a player of this calibre reinforces the reputation of the Umag tournament as one of the region’s most important sporting events, as well as a destination recognized by top athletes. Tennis fans will especially enjoy the matches between two players renowned for their exceptional one-handed backhands, as both Wawrinka and Tsitsipas excel in this skill.
The Plava Laguna Croatia Open will be held in Umag from July 19 to 26, with the main tournament starting as early as Sunday and the final scheduled for Saturday. This year’s event will be broadcast live across all continents - North and South America, Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
