Experience Marčana

Loborika House of Cycling

A story of passion, tradition, and Istria’s great athletes

Nestled in the gorgeous landscapes of southern Istria, Marčana is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic Istrian experience. Just a few kilometres away lies Loborika, a small place with a rich and vibrant cycling heritage.

The Loborika House of Cycling is a unique space dedicated to celebrating the region’s deep-rooted cycling tradition and the achievements of athletes who have put this part of Istria on the global cycling map. Within its walls, a remarkable story unfolds through photographs, medals, and trophies, each a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and passion of local cyclists.

More than just a museum, the House of Cycling is a place of inspiration. It brings history to life while encouraging future generations to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them. Every corner reflects a legacy of enthusiasm and commitment, inviting visitors to connect with the spirit of the past and the sporting heritage carefully preserved here.

No story of the House of Cycling would be complete without mentioning the legendary 1958 cycling champion, Nevio Valčić. His achievements bridged this small Istrian village with the world’s great races. Raised in Loborika, Nevio captured the hearts of cycling enthusiasts across the region, becoming a true symbol of Istrian sporting passion. His legacy lives on through his son, Luciano Valčić, who inherited his father’s love for cycling.

A truly special moment for the Valčić family, as well as for the entire village of Loborika, took place in 1983 during the Tour of Yugoslavia. On that memorable day, Luciano claimed victory and received the winner’s trophy from his father’s hands, creating a powerful and emotional scene that remains etched in the history of Istrian sport.

Another key figure in bringing Loborika’s name to the international cycling stage is Bruno Valčić. A cyclist and Nevio’s nephew, he began his career as a race official in 1997, working at some of the most prestigious cycling events in the world. In 2016, he served as chief commissaire at the Tour de France. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has officiated at around twenty editions of the Giro d’Italia, as well as the World Championships in 1998, 2001, and 2008, and the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

To this day, Loborika lives and breathes cycling, inspiring all who visit. Thanks to the House of Cycling, a symbol of community, passion, and sporting spirit, visitors have the opportunity to experience Istria through its rich cycling heritage and the remarkable stories of its sporting greats.
