Wine Roads of Istria: Top Ratings for Young Istrian Malvasias

Istrian Malvasia, an indigenous variety of Istria, has once again demonstrated its remarkable resilience. Although the growing season was meteorologically challenging, last year’s harvest produced healthy grapes of outstanding quality.

This was highlighted at the traditional En Primeur presentation of young Malvasias, held in Zagreb on February 2, 2026, and organized by Vinistra, the oldest and most prominent wine association in Croatia.

The premiere tasting of young Istrian Malvasias confirmed that the 2025 vintage has delivered wines with great promise and high expectations.

Fresh, Balanced, and Aromatic
“The 2025 Malvasias are distinguished by pronounced aromatics and clear varietal character, dominated by pleasant, sweet fruit notes intertwined with floral and floral-herbal aromas. They have retained a freshness that is beautifully integrated into their structure and body, resulting in well-balanced wines that remain true to their aromatic profile. Seven of the ‘most ready’ Malvasias were presented, selected by an expert panel as the finest expressions of the diverse terroirs of the Istrian peninsula. Among those chosen were the wineries Dešković, Enoist, Benazić, Veralda, Benvenuti, Kadum, and Defratta.

The En Primeur wine event is inspired by the French tradition of presenting young wines. The first premiere tasting of young Istrian Malvasia wines organized by Istrian winemakers was held in Zagreb in 2012. Since then, the event has grown beyond a classic tasting and has become an important meeting point for winemakers, industry professionals, distributors, restaurateurs, and the wider wine community.

En Primeur 2026 brought together as many as 64 Istrian winemakers to present the 2025 vintage for the first time. The growing season was nearly ideal, and the young Malvasias are characterized by freshness, balance, and expressive aromatics. The 2025 harvest has produced wines that justifiably raise high expectations.”

Istrian Wines Head to the Wine Paris Fair
At the prestigious Wine Paris fair, taking place from February 9 to 11, thirteen wineries will present their labels at the Vinistra stand, alongside two exclusive masterclasses. Renowned wine critic Caroline Gilby will talk about the many faces of Malvasia, while Decanter magazine editor Claire Cocks will offer an overview of Istrian winemaking.
