Description
Ghira is a boutique winery located on the northern outskirts of Novigrad, on land purchased by Bruno Mihelić and his wife Marija in 1981. Bruno spent many years working for the former PIK Umag wine company before deciding to embark on his own winemaking journey during the privatisation period. In 1997, he established the family estate and began producing wine. He was soon joined by his son Damir, who expanded his expertise through studies and training at several renowned wine institutes. Together, they cultivated eight hectares of vineyards and gradually develop their winery.
Bruno released his first wine under his own label in 2007. Sadly, he passed away prematurely in 2015, leaving the winery in the hands of his son Damir. With the unwavering support of his mother, Damir made a bold decision that would define the winery's future. He reduced the vineyard area to three hectares, retained only the indigenous varieties – Malvazija istarska, Teran and Muškat momjanski - and fully embraced biodynamic viticulture.
At the same time, the winery adopted a new name, Ghira, the nickname of Damir's maternal grandfather, Ferdinand, as a tribute to the family's roots. Today, Ghira produces seven wine labels, with most of its wines sold directly at the winery through its intimate tasting room, where visitors can discover both the wines and the philosophy that inspires Damir Mihelić's work.
