Autumn in Istria for Truffle Lovers

The Istrian gourmet offer is unimaginable without truffles - the unique delicacy with intensive smell and taste that has been loved from the Roman times. It was served on French court and among Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. The truffle is one of the most esteemed ingredients in the world gastronomy. It grows in some parts of Italy, France and Istria due to mild climate.

Istria is well-known as a truffle region - for its quality white truffles, often awarded. Truffle, also known as the “Istrian treasure” can be found on the area of Pazin, Buje and Buzet, in the Mirna River valley and Motovun forest.

The peak season for white truffle is October - so that most events connected to truffles and their tradition are organized in the period between September and November.

One of the most visited events is Days of the Zigante Truffles held in Livade from mid-September to mid-November. It encompasses truffle dishes exhibit, international wine exhibit, truffle hunt in the Motovun forest as well as a culinary show with local and foreign chefs.

At the beginning of November visit Buzet where another Truffle Festival awaits. Interesting programs dedicated to the Istrian truffle, along with truffle exhibit and fair, gather renowned producers of other products like wine, schnapps, cheese, prosciutto, honey, jam and olive oil.
